Tesla, BYD and Other EV Charger Installation Guide

Check vehicle compatibility, power ratings, connectors and site requirements before choosing a branded charger.

Start with the vehicle and routine

Tesla, BYD, Mercedes-Benz, BMW and other EVs can have different AC charging limits and connector arrangements. Check the vehicle manual, onboard charger limit and available supply, then explain daily mileage and parking time. These details matter more than the badge on the charger.

For overnight parking, a stable 7 kW supply meets many household needs. Higher power is useful only when the vehicle supports it and the site can provide it without excessive electrical upgrades.

Tesla and BYD considerations

Tesla owners may choose a Wall Connector, a third-party Type 2 unit or a shared network. Confirm model year, connector position, Wi-Fi requirements and load-management needs. When using third-party hardware, clarify who handles the charger warranty.

BYD and other Type 2 vehicles also need a check of single- or three-phase limits and any adapter requirement. Brand differences do not remove the need for correct wiring and protective devices.

Ratings and protection

Review current rating, IP protection, operating temperature, cable length and residual-current features. Outdoor bays need weather and UV protection; indoor bays need tidy trunking and impact protection. The upstream protection must be designed for the whole circuit, not assumed to be covered by the wallbox alone.

For multiple chargers on one board, assess simultaneous demand. Dynamic load management can reduce overload risk, but confirm the communication method and configuration before installation.

Installation and app setup

Confirm mounting height, connector direction, cable storage and door clearance. After installation, test voltage, earthing and residual-current protection before charging the actual vehicle. Demonstrate app pairing, firmware updates, user permissions and a manual charging method at handover.

If scheduled charging or current limits are used, document the settings. The charger should remain safe and understandable if the network is temporarily unavailable.

Plan for the next vehicle

A charger and cable route may last longer than the current car. Reserve conduit, board space and network capacity if a second EV, solar generation or a different vehicle is likely. This is future flexibility, not a reason to buy the highest rating today.

Keep the model, serial number, warranty, test report and route photographs. Stop using any brand of charger if it trips repeatedly, overheats or interrupts charging unexpectedly.
