Hong Kong EV Charger Installation Checklist

Prepare parking, electrical, property and handover information before requesting an EV charger assessment.

Gather bay and electrical information

Prepare clear photos of the bay, bay number, meter, distribution board and nearby walls. If the board is remote, photograph the likely route in sections and note distance, floors and common-area crossings. This allows an early review of complexity and approval needs.

Share the vehicle make, model, battery size, daily mileage and normal charging hours. Mention other high-load appliances so the installer can recommend a realistic power level.

Check capacity and protection

Look for space for a dedicated breaker and residual-current protection, but do not rely on the main rating alone. Existing wiring, earthing and simultaneous loads matter, especially in older or altered properties. A qualified person should inspect uncertain boards.

Charger rating, cable size and protective devices must match. If capacity is limited, consider a lower current, scheduled charging, load management or a supply upgrade instead of connecting a high-power unit directly.

Property documents

Estates may request bay proof, an application form, charger specifications, a route drawing, method statement and contractor details. Village houses need permission for external-wall or ground routes, while commercial sites may add fire, insurance, site-safety and multi-bay load requirements.

Ask management for the latest requirements and keep email approvals, drawings and dates. A clear record makes any route change easier to resolve.

Prepare for installation day

Clear the bay and access route, move the vehicle and arrange lift, gate or management access in advance. Outdoor work may need weather flexibility because rain affects drilling, waterproofing and testing.

Do not move barriers or touch the board. If the actual site differs from the approved scope, document it and review the change and cost before continuing.

Handover and maintenance

Test voltage, earthing, residual-current protection, charging current and vehicle communication. Ask for a demonstration of start, stop, fault reset and app controls. Confirm that the cable is stored safely and that the route does not obstruct access.

Keep the test report, serial number, warranty, photographs and route plan. Periodically check casing, connector, trunking and fixings, and stop using the charger if it overheats, smells, takes in water or trips repeatedly.
