Understand the site, equipment and electrical factors behind a Hong Kong EV charger installation quote.
What drives the price
A home EV charger quote is based on the complete electrical route, not only the wallbox. Distance from the meter or distribution board to the parking bay, wall penetrations, trunking, access, wall construction and estate working rules all affect the work. A fixed bay close to a suitable supply is easier to assess than a remote bay that crosses a common area.
Power rating also matters. A 7 kW single-phase charger suits many daily users, while 11 kW or 22 kW three-phase options require the right vehicle and available capacity. The highest rating is not automatically the best choice; daily mileage and the time available for overnight charging are usually more useful planning inputs.
Compare a complete scope
Ask each installer to list the charger model, cable size, protective devices, trunking, mounting hardware, labour, testing and transport. “Supply and install” can hide important exclusions such as residual-current protection, waterproof enclosures, wall repairs or removal of old wiring. A written scope makes quotations comparable and prevents surprises during the work.
Network access, load management, card access and after-sales support can change the total cost. A single home bay may not need commercial software, while a shared supply serving several bays may benefit from dynamic load management. Consider warranty and ongoing support together with the equipment price.
Cable distance and site complexity
Long routes may require larger cables, multiple bends, wall or ceiling work and additional protection. Outdoor village-house installations need weather-resistant mounting and protection from rain, sun, dust and vehicle impact. These details should be designed for the actual site rather than copied from an indoor installation.
Common-area work can require temporary barriers, reinstatement, insurance or restricted working hours. These coordination tasks consume real labour even when the charger itself is simple, so they should be visible in the quotation.
How to request useful quotations
Send the same information to each contractor: bay number, clear site photographs, meter and distribution-board locations, vehicle model, preferred charging power and property rules. Request a base option plus clearly priced options for longer cable runs, upgraded protection or load management.
Check the model number, warranty owner, testing, programme, payment stages and the process for unforeseen work. A very low headline price may omit safety equipment or estate coordination. Choose a team that explains the electrical plan and records the completed route.
Budget beyond the installation day
Reserve budget for the charger, protection, cable route and labour, as well as any estate or site fees. If you may add a second vehicle or solar generation later, tell the installer early so conduits and capacity can be planned while access is available.
Keep the invoice, model details, test results and installation photographs. Outdoor equipment should be checked periodically for water ingress, loose fittings and cable damage. Good records support warranty claims and make future upgrades easier.
